Using institutional arrangements and hybrid automata for regional scale agent-based modelling of land change

چکیده

This paper discusses the use of agent-based models for capturing land change in large frontier areas. Applying agent models in such areas is not straightforward, given the lack of data. To date, most agent based models of land frontiers study local areas using in-situ information. At regional scales, agent-based modellers need additional ways to describe collective decision-making. This paper presents two ideas to deal with the complexities of agent-based models at such scales: institutional arrangements and hybrid automata. Institutional arrangements help to model multiagent interaction by explaining why, although there are rules and norms for land use, these rules are not always followed. A hybrid automaton combines a discrete state machine with continuous actions inside a state. This formalism captures states and transitions of agents in a simulation and helps to build expressive models. We validate our ideas by building a deforestation model in an area of 200,000 km in Amazonia. Results show that we need to set different arrangements to capture changes in agents’ behaviour, as they react to external conditions. Thus, combining the ideas of institutional arrangements and hybrid automata improves the explanatory power of agent models for regional scales.

Project Title Land Use Change in Amazonia: Institutional Analysis and Modelling at multiple temporal and spatial scales (LUA/IAM)

1 Summary This project aims to understand and model the social processes that contribute to large-scale deforestation in Amazonia. Biomass burning emissions associated with deforestation in the region are responsible for 74% of Brazil's greenhouse gas emissions and have an impact on global environmental changes. We argue that land changes in Amazonia are brought about by social and institutiona...

Improving Agent Performance for Multi-Resource Negotiation Using Learning Automata and Case-Based Reasoning

In electronic commerce markets, agents often should acquire multiple resources to fulfil a high-level task. In order to attain such resources they need to compete with each other. In multi-agent environments, in which competition is involved, negotiation would be an interaction between agents in order to reach an agreement on resource allocation and to be coordinated with each other. In recent ...

Simulation and Evaluation of Urban Development Scenarios Using Integration of Cellular Automata Model and Game Theory

Urban growth is a dynamic and evolutionary spatial and social process that relates to the changes of urban spatial units and the transformation of people’s lifestyles and consequently demographic changes. Considering the urban development process as a function of land uses interactions, population structure and the strategic behavior of the agents involved in the urban development process (the ...

Background This paper presents findings from a study which sought to understand why health workers working under the results-based financing (RBF) arrangements in Zimbabwe reported being satisfied with the improvements in working conditions and compensation, but paradoxically reported lower motivation levels compared to those not working under RBF arrangements.   Methods...

Integrating cellular automata Markov model to simulate future land use change of a tropical basin

Predicting land use change is an indispensable aspect in identifying the best development and management of land resources and their potential. This study used certified land-use maps of 1997, 2006, and 2015 combined with ancillary data such as road networks, water bodies and slopes, obtained from the Department of Agriculture and the Department of Surveying and Mapping in Malaysia, respectivel...
